Joe Rice wrote in Live Steam Magazine, May 1980:

Through letters from customers as well as questions raised at the Live Steam meets, it was determined that a book was needed to assist the new-comer in The Hobby. Bill went to a good friend, Tom Hill, who had experience in various sizes of Live Steam and also had experience in the field of writing. At first Bill wanted Tom to write the book, to be published by Kosters. Then, as the book progressed, Bill added material and the book, Large-scale Model Railroading, was published under both names. This book filled a need and, as such copies have been sent all over the world.
